Added money means additional excitement
Saturday when Modifieds, Super Late Models return to Orange Show
SAN BERNARDINO (July 19, 2007) –
A $1,000 winner’s purse for the Hype Manufacturing Super Late
Models, more than two dozen entrants trying to qualify for the Lucas
Oil ASA Modifieds main event, and the legalized mayhem of a Demolition
Derby will help create excitement Saturday night at Orange Show Speedway.
The cancellation of the July 4 races means that it
has been more than a month since the Super Late Models, ASA Pro 4s and
Aflac Factory Fours have been seen on the quarter-mile paved oval at
the National Orange Show Events Center .
To help welcome back class leader Rick Chavez, defending
champion Glen Cummings and the rest of the Super Late Model class, Stockall
Services is sponsoring a purse increase that will enable the main event
winner to take home $1,000.
That’s also the winner’s payoff for the
Lucas Oil ASA Modifieds, who already have 26 entries for the second
of the series’ three appearances at the ASA-sanctioned track.
The series first race at the track, on June 9, was won by Dean Kuhn,
of Oceanside , who started on the pole and led all 75 laps of a race
that was slowed by two red flags and five cautions and ended with just
eight of 22 starters still running.
There will be 22 starters for Saturday’s race
as well. That puts the initial emphasis on qualifying, since 16 starting
positions are determined by the results of those solo runs against the
clock. Four positions will go to the top finishers in a B main, and
the final two are reserved for provisional starters, with those spots
awarded according to the point standings.
Jason Patison of Corona leads that category, thanks
to wins in first two of the series’ nine races. Patison, who was
fourth on June 9, has a 14-point lead over Danny Gay, with Mike Salm
30 points behind in third.
Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. and racing gets under
way at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (62 and
over), handicapped and Juniors (13-16) and $2 for children (6-12). Active
military personnel and veterans with valid military identification are
admitted free of charge. Parking is $4 per car with entry through Gate
3 off Mill Street .
Those unable to make it to the speedway still can
follow the action through “Orange Show Speedway Live,” the
radio broadcast on KTTD (AM 1350) that begins at 8 p.m. and is simulcast
on the Internet at www.nixacountry.com.
Chavez, a two-time winner this season, leads the
Super Late Model standings by 30 points over Frankie Gould and 36 over
2005 champion John Manke, who got his first victory of the season in
the most recent race for the class, on June 16.
Cummings, who missed the most recent race while making
repairs on his Pontiac Grand Prix, will return. Also scheduled to return,
for his first race in several years, is former track champion Dave Scheidecker.
Victorville’s Rex Lockwood, who got his second
win on June 16, leads the ASA Pro 4 standings by 18 points over Chuck
Becker II and 42 over Eddie Secord, who has won five times but missed
an early-season race.
Another June 16 winner, Spencer Samaro, of San Bernardino
, has built a 30-point lead over Martin Huizenga of Hemet in the Aflac
Factory Four class.
