Chavez feels good after Super Late Model
win at Orange Show Speedway
SAN BERNARDINO – Rick Chavez, sidelined
by a heart attack late last season, celebrated his return to full health
with a wire-to-wire win in the Hype Manufacturing Super Late Model main
event Saturday night (March 31) at Orange Show Speedway.
Chavez,
46, a trucking company owner from Santee who finished third in the March
10 opener, started his RC Trucking/Lyle Hunter Tax Service Ford on the
pole for Saturday’s 40-lap race. He held off fast-starting Charles
Price going into Turn 1 on the quarter-mile paved oval and never was
in danger of surrendering the lead thereafter, despite race-long pressure
from Price, 19, of Redlands .
Chavez had been forced to miss the final race of
the 2006 season due to his heart problem, but this season is racing
a Legends Car and am ASA Speed Truck in addition to his Super Late Model.
Fast qualifier Linny White of Colton started fifth
and finished third in the 17-car field, with John Manke of Ramona fourth
and Frankie Gould of Woodland Hills fifth.
Toni McCray of Highland , a former publicist for
Ray Evernham’s NASCAR teams, made her debut in the class and finished
10th in front of a crowd of 1,481.
Rex Lockwood, a logistic engineer from Victorville,
held off fast-closing John Soares of San Bernardino to win the 30-lap
Soboba Casino Pro 4 main event. Lockwood, second to Eddie Secord in
the season’s first race March 10, put his No. 14 Ford-powered
Chevrolet Monte Carlo into the lead on lap 14 and had a comfortable
advantage until Soares moved into second with five laps to go.
Secord did not compete after breaking a clutch fork
early in the day.
Jered King of Victorville won the most competitive
event of the night, the 25-lap Factory Four main event, and Mike O’Hara
of Canyon Country won his second Mini StocKar feature in as many tries
over Dean Caskey of Grand Terrace.
King, in a BMW 318i sedan, bested Hemet ’s
Martin Huizenga, San Bernardino ’s Spencer Samaro and opening
night winner Tony Dumont in a race that saw the four race virtually
in tandem throughout. Huizenga, in a Nissan, and Samaro, in Toyota ,
were driving mini-trucks and Dumont was in a Mercedes sedan in the class
formed by combining the former Sport Truck and Sport Compact classes.
The other main event of the night, a 25-lap contest
for Street Stock cars, was won by John Reiman of Rosemont, who finished
fifth but got promoted when the four cars that finished ahead of him
were disqualified after failing post-race technical inspection.
Racing at Orange Show Speedway continues April 7
with Outlaw Figure 8, Late Model, Stock Pony and Legends Cars providing
the action.
